June 2013

  • On June 17, 2013, Domus became Connecticut’s first Certified Sanctuary Organization, which is the culmination of a three-year, whole-organization process. Sanctuary is an evidence-supported whole-culture approach to creating an organizational culture where healing from psychological and social traumatic experience is supported. Because many Domus youth have experienced significant and ongoing traumatic situations in their short lives, when adults and systems let them down or purposefully hurt them, we wanted to create in every program a place where children feel safe and where their biological, cognitive, and social wounds can be healed. We also want staff, who often internalize and take on the pain of the children in their care, to take care of themselves so they’re better able to support our kids.
  • Domus Chief Education Officer Craig Baker received a 40 Under 40 Award from the Fairfield County Business Journal. The awards honor the best, brightest, and most creative young professionals in Fairfield County.  Winners are chosen for their dedication to personal and professional development and leadership qualities.
  • New Haven nonprofit Ice The Beef founder Darrell Allick speaks to Domus Academy students about why they must stay off the streets; read the New Haven Register article here. In fall 2013, Ice The Beef will begin mentoring Domus Academy youth who need extra adult support in their lives.
