Read a quote from a Trailblazers Academy literacy specialist about M, a current 8th grader who came to us reading far behind:

M had made reference to reading Diary of a Whimpy Kid before over the summer but told me that he didn’t get a chance to finish it. We talked about actually finishing this book and not starting it today, getting frustrated and quitting tomorrow. In the 3 years that I have worked with M, he and I have never read an entire book cover to cover.  For the past two years we have read from the Scary Story trilogy (which he loves) but never a chapter book. Today, both he and I took turns reading a page or two from A Diary of a Whimpy Kid.  We got to page 25 without any problems. M reads out loud (really well!), even though he hates to do it (he gets embarrassed so he closed my office door); he also interacted with the story: making references to a friend who is “sorta like Rowley,” self correcting, making predictions (he was right), and attempting to sound out multisyllabic words. This is HUGE!
