FUTURE 5 connects low-income high school students to brighter educational and job futures. Through an in-person and online mentoring system, FUTURE 5 encourages teenagers to make the connection between their current high school experience and educational or professional goals of their own. We seek to help our student members along the path to college or a professional trade school by providing them with the knowledge and tools that instill confidence as well as a support system and the networking connections that they need to succeed.

F5 launched in March 2009 and became a program of Domus in May 2011. Our purpose is to create a game-changing tool to attack one of the critical social issues of our times: the isolation and disconnection of disadvantaged teens and the resulting waste in human potential.

Mission: to connect high school students to the world and their futures—by helping them develop a plan for achievement in school and life, and by connecting them to a web of on-going coaching support to make this achievement possible.

Our beliefs:
  • We believe it is never too late to help a student chart a productive path in life.
  • We believe that life—for our students, just as it is for adults—is very much about who you know and making connections.
  • We believe that each of our disconnected students can and should be an active initiator and self-advocate in reaching out for help.
  • We love mentoring, but believe that we need to develop a new model—a model that makes mentoring (we call it coaching) easier, more accessible, and more cost efficient than many existing programs.
  • We believe that there is incredible connection potential to be tapped in the power of today’s social networking technology.

What we do:
We recruit students who are beginning to think seriously about the future and are willing to commit to the FUTURE 5 program. Our most likely recruits are high school juniors and seniors—students who are beginning to think about life after a high school diploma.
We start by conducting a series of five workshops with groups of 12 students and talk mostly about one thing: the future.
  • What do I want to accomplish in my life?
  • How do I define success?
  • What stands in my way?
  • How do I work my way over, around and through the potential barriers to achieving my goals?
  • Why and how do I reach out for help, understanding that life is all about connections!

During these workshops a FUTURE 5 Lead Coach helps each student develop a personal “Game Plan”. It’s a plan where each student defines short and long term goals. And, most importantly, the Game Plan outlines the specific steps necessary to reach these goals – steps that relate to personal attitude, education, family relationships, pursuing new interests and reaching out for help.

Finally, our students reach out to make five valuable connections through the FUTURE 5 coaching network. One student, five “coaches”! Academics, college, sports, religion, life issues and much more – each FUTURE 5 volunteer coach is matched with a student according to a coach’s relevant experiences, talents or interests. Each coach represents someone potentially instrumental in providing a valuable window on the world for a student.

No one coach has to do it all. Instead, each coach, with guidance from our Lead Coach, becomes part of a student’s ongoing FUTURE 5 network.

And to make these connections easy and accessible for as many students and coaches as possible, ongoing communications happen online in virtual time over FUTURE 5’s secure website.
